What is a retirement funding gap?

A retirement funding gap is the difference between the money you'll need to fund your lifestyle in retirement and the money you're currently on track to have.

Many New Zealanders assume NZ Super will be enough, but for many people it only covers part of the lifestyle they want. Understanding your funding gap gives you the opportunity to plan ahead, rather than leaving it until retirement.

How is your retirement fund calculated?

Our calculator estimates how much you'll need by looking at:

  • Your current age
  • When you'd like to retire
  • How long you expect to be retired
  • Your estimated annual retirement lifestyle costs
  • The assets you've already built, including KiwiSaver, cash, investments and other income-producing assets

It then compares your estimated retirement fund requirement against your current assets to estimate whether you're on track.

Understanding your results

After completing the calculator, you'll receive:

Years Until Retirement

The number of years you have left to build your retirement wealth before you stop working.

Your Retirement Lifestyle Is Funded Until

Based on your inputs, this is the age your retirement savings are projected to support your chosen lifestyle.

For example, if you retire at 65 and your savings are expected to last for 23 years, your retirement plan is funded until age 88.

Required Retirement Fund

The estimated amount of money you'll need to fund your desired lifestyle throughout retirement.

Total Assets

The combined value of the assets you've entered, including KiwiSaver, savings, investments and other income-producing assets.

Your Retirement Funding Gap

If your projected retirement costs exceed your current retirement assets, this figure shows the estimated gap you'll need to bridge to fully fund your retirement lifestyle.

Knowing your funding gap allows you to make informed decisions today, giving your investments more time to grow.

Why knowing your retirement gap matters

The earlier you understand your retirement position, the more options you have.

Many investors use property alongside KiwiSaver and other investments to help build long-term wealth and generate additional income in retirement. Even relatively small investments made early can have a significant impact over time thanks to capital growth and compounding returns.

Understanding your retirement funding gap is the first step towards creating a plan to close it.
